Beth
Beth is a Hearth Member of the Eden Invitation Community.
She collects pencils (especially Blackwings and vintage) and loves books. Her favorites include Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, The Five Wounds by Kirstin Valdez Quade, and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Beth shares that her most recent accomplishment is finishing the unabridged Les Misérables, "along with keeping my three kids alive and mostly intact."
Beth was received into the Catholic Church in 2018, while navigating a difficult separation and eventual divorce: "It was the burning love of Christ for me just as I was that drew me home. I hope that my prints convey something of that love."
This piece is called "Sacred Heart I & II" (Linocut, Woodcut, written description)
"I initially made the smaller linocut print to the scale of the average adult male heart as a meditation on the Incarnation, trying to convey the beautiful reality that the heart of Christ is a real human heart, unlike traditional images of the Sacred Heart which tend to be somewhat abstracted from a real heart. The second, large scale iteration, this time a woodcut at the scale of 24"x36" and including the traditional crown of thorns and side wound I missed in the first version, is an attempt to speak to the wideness and openness of Christ's heart (in the less literal sense). There is room for all in Christ's heart for everyone, and that brings comfort and hope to me as a queer, divorced, disabled person."
