From the direct references in Scripture, a compelling portrait of Mary Magdalene emerges. She was a woman burdened by spiritual warfare (seven demons, to be exact). Her experience of grace led her to a life of rugged generosity, keeping company with the disciples and providing for their material needs. When nearly all the apostles fled, Mary stayed close to Christ. She didn’t shirk from the Way of the Cross, from the blood and shame of Calvary. Even after the death of Jesus, she couldn’t bring herself to leave. No, she returned to the tomb with more burial spices to anoint Jesus’ body. She encounters her Beloved in the garden, and He sends her back to the brethren to proclaim the good news of the Resurrection.
But let's roll the camera back just a little bit, to the moment depicted here. In the Resurrection Garden, Mary Magdalene wasn’t quite sure how to hope: “They've taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.”
But then comes the revelation. The simple, joyful utterance of a name. “Mary!” This image captures the moment when grief slowly gives way to the surprise of joy. It’s the moment when you realize the loss wasn’t quite what you thought it was. It’s when you say, “I’ve passed through a dark night I didn’t anticipate, and now unexpected life is waiting on the other side.”
Eden Invitation is providing this very real vision of life for people with LGBTQ+ experiences across the United States and even the world. We hope to journey towards Christ, just as Mary Magdalene did, which is why she's one of our patron saints!
